RE: Kasie Baltes

I retired as editor of The Oxford Press in October but prior to that I supervised interns from the journalism program at Miami University. Kasie Baltes was one of those interns during the summer semester 2009. Kasie worked at the weekly newspaper for 12 hours per week for grade credit. Her responsibilities included general assignment reporting, doing stories on a variety of topics from city government to sports. She proved to be versatile in her assignments and was willing to take on any stories we needed to have done.

She was an excellent writer, capturing the flavor of the story as well as providing copy needing little editing or correcting.

Because it was the summer session, her class schedule was mixed with commuting from home in Cincinnati. As a result, we scheduled her hours for two days of the week so as to cut down on her commuting time and to allow her to work a paying job. Kasie was flexible with her hours, shifting them as necessary to accommodate stories and sources for those stories. She was willing to be flexible to change hours within a day or days of the week. We have a small staff and depend on the interns to provide a big part of our coverage so I appreciated her willingness to take on stories that needed to be done and to shift hours in order to get them done.

She took part in our weekly story meetings, offering story ideas as well as suggestions for treatment of stories including the stories being taken by others. She was punctual in arriving at the office for her work hours and completed stories on time as well as keeping me posted on the process of her stories. She was also willing to work on her stories at home, if necessary, in order to get them competed on time.

Kasie did excellent work for us this summer and I recommend her highly for her writing ability as well as work ethic.
