Letter of Recommendation for KASIE BALTES

Kasie Baltes completed COM 439 AD Organizational Communication with me here at Miami University this past Fall. Kasie did excellent work in this senior capstone courses and was one of my best students.

In Com 439 Kasie did very well on her class presentations, written work, especially her thesis research paper. She learned a great deal about self-directed learning through the use of Learning and Mentor contracts in order to experience applied learning, the constructive uses of feedback, and how to take corrective action for specific personal development of her speaking and writing skills. As her grade reflects, she performed very well in COM 439.

Kasie was required to write her capstone research thesis, where she applied McCombs & Shaw’s Agenda Setting theory to nightly televised news on Fox and MSNBC. She completed her paper, defended it before class peers, and calculated the statistical results, which clearly indicated she did outstanding research and writing with this research assignment. She has a copy of this completed thesis displayed in her career e-portfolio.

Kasie was also required to guide a teaching facilitation with her peers taking them through a 40-45 minute experiential process. She did very well based on the statistical results of her peers, her own, and my personal assessment where she not only identified weaknesses, but a corrective action plan to improve her future teaching, training, and small group interaction facilitation efforts.

Another unique COM 439 assignment involved the use of self-directed Learning and Mentor contracts as a process of transitioning from college into a professional career. At the end of the term, students assess their level of accomplishment with these learning and mentor contracts. Kasie worked well with her mentor, Mike Horsley, News Operations Manager for Channel 12 WKRC-TV. With her mentor’s support Kasie achieved both of her personal learning objectives, namely to become a more competent public speaker, and secondly, to generate a career e-portfolio for use after graduation. Kasie has a real interest in journalism and hope to make this the major focus of her future career.

I believe that Kasie has the potential for being a very good journalist. I was delighted to hear that she continuing to maintain her contacts gained at local TV stations. With her highly developed communication skills working with others, she has the potential for being a dynamic TV journalist.

In short, Kasie has a professional skill base with her Miami Communication degree. She is a good writer, researcher, gender sensitive communicator, public speaker, and critical thinker. Her drive and work ethic will be greatly appreciated by any employer who chooses to hire her. Having guided many seniors through their college to career transition, I truly believe Kasie has the foundation to be highly professional journalist.

Respectfully Submitted,
